NEW YORK (TCN) — Police arrested a man they allege fatally stabbed a subway rider during rush hour when they got into an argument because the suspect stepped on the victim’s shoes.

According to WPIX-TV, on April 25 at 8:37 a.m., suspect Luis José-Duarte and victim John Sheldon reportedly got into an altercation on the No. 5 train when José-Duarte allegedly stepped on Sheldon’s shoes. The men continued arguing as they got onto the platform at the Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall station, during which José-Duarte allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed Sheldon in the chest, then fled the scene.

Sheldon was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Police located and arrested José-Duarte Wednesday, April 30, and arrested him on a charge of manslaughter, WPIX reports.

Sheldon reportedly had 94 prior arrests regarding incidents on public transportation, including assault on transit officers, theft, and robbery.
