Chaos in Majorca as restaurant forced to beg cyclists ‘don’t pee here’

Furious restaurant owners are forced to put up warning signs to cyclists as their grounds are used as a toilet spot for those needing to relieve themselves. Each year, the business hangs up a blackboard, nailed to a tree, urging cyclists to “not pee here”.

The restaurant, located on the Colle de Soller in Majorca – one of the island’s most famous climbs – has been used as a go-to spot for many years for the athletes when they need to go. Every year, thousands of cyclists descend on the popular route situated 500 meters above sea level, dubbed as a “must-climb” for anyone visiting the area.

However, this has pushed the restaurant, which is located on the mountain, to hang the sign which spells out their grievance in three different languages: Spanish, English and German.

The sign reads: “This is NOT a public toilet! Do not pee here!” The owners have had to battle with unpleasant smells, or worse, on their grounds, just a mere few meters away from both the entrance and the terrace.

While the sign is reportedly making an impact, many cyclists will have to pick a different public place nearby, which may leave another business with the same issue.

Coll de Soller is a climb in the Majorcan region of Serra de Treamuntana. The route is 8.9km long which spans 473 vertical meters – the top ascent reached 497 meters.  The average gradient of the hill is 5.3%, making it a difficult climb in the Mediterranean heat.

The mountain is a favourite for cyclists due to the little traffic as there is a tunnel underground for cars and coaches – however, bikes are banned from entering underground.

The views span all around while ascending and descending, stretching north to the sea and south over the island to Palma.
